Brihadishwara temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in India. This temple is situated in Thanjavur, in the State Tamilanadu, South India. This is the largest Shiva temple in India. Bruhad means large Sanskrit. Thanjavuru is well connected with the famous places near and around it. The nearest place of this temple is the temple of Arunachala with a distance of 60.8 kilometers. The temple was built by Raja Raja Chola Bruhadishwara, the king of the Chola kingdom. So, this temple is also called Rajarajeshwara Ayam. It is also called Peruvudiyar Kovil meaning Bruhadishwara (Shiva). Thanjavur has excellent heritage of Hinduism and India. It is also featured in the list of UNESCO World Heritage. This temple is the most famous of all the temples in Tamilanadu state. The idol of the goddess was built by King Pandya .Here the idol of Subramanya is built by Vijayanagara kings and Vinayaka idol is built by the Marata kings.

The idols Dakshinamurti Lord, sun and moon are too big in this temple. It is one of the few temples to have the idols of Asta (8) Dikpalakhs. These idols are Indhrudu, Agni, Yamudu, Niruti, Varanudu, Vayavu, Kuberudu and Ishanyudu. Each idol of Ashta Dikpalakas has 6 feet tall. The temple roof is so beautiful and we can not express in words and also the beauty of the sculptures. And another amazing thing is that the temple of the dome is designed so that water from all directions come to a single point when it rains.
